Course Description
This course is designed to provide participants with a detailed and up-to-date overview of Locate Faults in Power System Underground Power Cables. It covers the power cable testing and construction; the cable pipe, joints, terminations and accessories for XLPE cables; the testing of distribution cables; the routine tests, special tests, type tests and site tests after installation; the high and extra high voltage testing, impulse voltage test and AC voltage test of the insulation; and the dielectric losses, cable measurements and loss measurement of dissipation factor.
Further, the course will also discuss the analysis of cable measurements results and the three-conductor cable insulation diagram; the partial discharge techniques and PD detection for cable diagnostics; the physical background of PD, types of partial discharge, characteristics of discharge patterns and breakdown cable voltage; the partial discharge test facility and test circuit inside shielded room; the calibration of partial discharge system; and the measurement of partial discharge.
During this interactive course, participants will learn the PD measurement methods available and the importance of PD for insulation of oil XLPE cables; the standard for onsite testing; the principle of VLF generator; the dissipation factor and measurements based on XLPE; the water treeing in polymeric insulation and comparison of electrical treeing and water treeing; the comparison of channel growth; the simplified dielectric equivalent circuit of new cables and the application of VLF / PD diagnosis; tracing of cable fault location, PD tracks in slip joins for cables and cable fault types; the methods of cable fault location; the fault distance from cable end, bridge method (wheatstone) and cable tracing using cable locator; the acoustic fault location, propagation time measurement, audio frequency twist method and cable sheet fault location; the pin pointing set and cable test van, reduction of in-service cable failures, prioritization of cables in a cable replacement and development of a documented history of cable condition; and the cost reduction due to reduce in-services cable failures.
