Course Description

This practical and highly-interactive course includes various practical sessions and exercises. Theory learnt will be applied using our state-of-the-art simulators. This course aims to provide the participants with a sound understanding of the effects of the thermal environment on people and means of assessing and controlling the risks associated with thermal stress. On completing this course successfully, the participants will be able to:-. 1) Identify sources of thermal stress within the working environment. 2) Understand the nature of thermal strain on the body. 3) Make an assessment of the thermal environment through appropriate measurement and other means. 4) Evaluate the likely risk from exposure to thermal stress. 5) Suggest appropriate control approaches for the thermal environment. During this interactive course, participants will learn the evaluation and control of cold environments and the various approaches to risk assessment; the personal factors mitigating against hot work, simple introduction to control by engineering and organizational measuring and hot surfaces; the thermal surveys covering measuring equipment and degree of risk assessment; the evaluation of cold environments comprising of assessment indices; the evaluation of cold environments covering personal factors, engineering controls, management controls and clothing; the various approaches to risk assessment that include AIOH tiered approach and SA DoMR code of practice for an occupational health programme on thermal stress; and the quantitative and qualitative approaches and physiological assessments.
